Portable Network Graphic

Pros

  • PNGs are smaller JPEGs, which makes them take up less storage space and download faster.
  • Their ability to support transparency makes it possible to create web graphics with transparent backgrounds.
  • They are excellent for storing high-quality images since they do not lose their quality when compressed.
  • They are compatible with all major browsers like Chrome, Google, Firefox, and Safari, and you can use them on all website sizes.
  • They support interlaced mode that creates lower-resolution versions of images that can be quickly displayed. Thus, it is ideal for images that need online viewing.

Cons

  • Unlike other formats, PNG does not support animation.
  • They can be difficult to edit since they are lossless.
  • While their transparency is advantageous, it can sometimes cause artifacts on the image’s edges.
  • It is challenging to print images in PNG format.

Bitmap File Format (BMP)

Pros

√ Being uncompressed file types, they maintain their original quality without losing data.

√ They are both easy to read and write because of their simple structure.

√ BMPs support 1-bit monochrome to 24-bit true color, among other color depths.

Since they are uncompressed, BMP doesn't suffer from color artifacts, which are visible defects on images that are caused by compression.

√ BMP image file format can store alpha channel data.

√ Virtually all image editing and viewing software support BMP.

Cons

√  They are less efficient when printed compared to TIFF and PDF file formats.

It’s not well-suited for animations because it lacks features found in GIFs.

As BMP files lack progressive loading of images, the entire image can only be displayed when it has fully loaded.

If fast loading times on web pages are a priority, BMP files are not ideal.

They are inefficient with images that have several colors because of their limited compression.

√ BMP files are larger as compared to JPEG file format.
